Launched in 1988 as a partnership business, Sumathi Sports pioneered in introducing high quality sports goods to Sri Lanka. The world renown "Kookaburra" brand, used by internationally recognized batsmen the world over such as the Waugh brothers Steve & Mark Atherton, Aravinda De Silva & Sanath Jayasuriya, to name a few, was brought to Sri Lanka by Sumathi Sports

In 2006, the partnership was incorporated as Sumathi Sports (Private) Limited and continues to cater to up-and-coming cricketers in Sri Lanka, serving the needs of the game which has emerged as the virtual national sport of Sri Lanka

Fierce competition from the influx of interior quality fake products into the country has been successfully crushed by enforcing the intellectual property rights of "Kookaburra" vested in its Sole Agent, Sumathi Sports(Pvt) Ltd

The company also caters to other sports such as basketball, badminton, table tennis, carom, netball, volley ball, chess, tennis, hockey, swimming and athletics, making a wide range of branded sports goods available to local sportsmen
